1989-01-01 · While most commentators on Foucault's genealogical method see a similarity and continuity between it and Nietzsche's method, these similarities encompass only the pairing of power, however defined, with some type of discursive practices. Foucault does not distrust a reading of these practices on the level of their intended meaning. As one of the important theories of Michel Foucault, genealogy deconstructs truth, arguing that truth is, more often than not, discovered by chance, backed up by the operation of Power/knowledge or the consideration of interest. Genealogists draw on oral traditions, historical records, genetic analysis, and other records to obtain information about a family and to demonstrate kinship and pedigrees lineage or breed) of its members.
